I've never really thought about Fur Elise much. It's always just been a pretty song. But now, sitting in my dark kitchen, eating chocolate, I think about it. I wonder who Beethoven – it was Beethoven wasn't it? – wrote it for. A friend? A lover? The song is beautiful but heart-wrenchingly sad. I wonder what happened to the girl, Elise. There's an element of anger, but the last chord resounds deep and somber and terribly sad. Chocolate stains my fingers but I go to the piano and begin to play. The first strains are soft and sad, utterly heartbreaking. My fingers tremble on the high E for just a second but then the music sweeps me on to the s
